First, there is a shift from ordinary human perception, construed in terms of contemporary commonsense notions, to the real (or super-real) objects of scientific investigation such as the primary qualities of Galileo and Newton. This usage will then be consistent with the literature on theory-ladenness in philoso-phy, which also tends to use the term 'theory' in this very broad sense.
