It has porticoes with stone railings and is over 16m high. It is particularly famous for the extraordinarily rich decorative work on the four monumental gateways or torana that provide access. After the reign of the Mauryas, the Sanchi Stupa was vandalised by Pushyamitra Shunga in the mid-second century BCE. It was later encased in stone, rebuilt and expanded by future Shunga kings during 187–78 BCE.
